Post extraction instructions

Please follow the instructions below to encourage healing and rapid recovery following an extraction

  1. Leave the gauze pack in place, biting down on it for at least the next 20 minutes. You may then remove the pack, but do not rinse mouth or spit out as this may disturb the blood clot, and so delay healing. You may rinse your mouth with warm salt water the day after your extraction to keep the socket clean.
  2. If bleeding occurs, place a piece of folded gauze (or other similar) into the socket, and bite on this for about 20 mins sitting upright.
  3. Some mild discomfort and swelling is normal, a painkiller such as ibuprofen (NOT for asthmatics) or paracetamol should be sufficient to relieve discomfort. Avoid aspirin, and DO NOT TAKE MORE THE RECOMMENDED DOSE.
  4. Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 24 hours after the extraction.
  5. Avoid exercise and extremes of temperature.
  6. If persistent discomfort or bleeding occurs, contact the surgery on 01 4542022.
